January 25: National Holiday Idea – Jack LaLanne Fitness Day: Celebrating the Life of One of Our Greatest Contributor to Health and Fitness.

Through my many years of counseling friends about the benefits of health and fitness, I have come to one conclusion that cannot be debated: People look to others for inspiration on how to sustain good health and around eating habits.

While many emulate their favorite sports figures (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery), or turn to Weight Watchers, I have always looked for inspiration from the GODFATHER of Fitness, the true Pioneer and trail blazer, Jack LaLanne. I urge you to do the same!  It is with sadenss that Jack LaLanne passed away last night.

We all know that Jack gained worldwide recognition for his success as a chiropractor and bodybuilder, and for his incredible acts of strength and endurance.  What I find most remarkable however is his ability to foretell the future.  If you review some of his videos and TV spots, Jack was warning of an impending obesity crisis as early as 1952.  He communicated then that we are consuming sugary soft drinks, eating food out of a bag instead of directly from the farm, and getting lazy through the increased use of technology.  If viewed now, you would think he was speaking in 2011.  Jack said back then how it will be an epidemic that will have negative and long lasting effects on our society unless we change our ways.  Having hosted him on Dr. Galati’s radio program, YourHealthFirst a few years ago, we were honored that he shared his insights with us.  Jack was “embarrassed and sickened” at how far off course the United States has come regarding fitness and sensible nutrition. He was saddened at the unhealthy course we were on and dedicated his life to inspiring people to take control of their health.

Jack was simply a man way ahead of this time and my hero.  I am in awe at a man who dedicated over 80 years of his life helping people by spreading the gospel according to Jack.  Fitness was his religion and passion.  He did not just preach about good health, he led by example.

I wrote a letter to President and Mrs. Obama nominating that January 23 be set aside for Jack LaLanne Fitness day.  While Jack deserves so much more than that, let’s be sure to celebrate his life and never forget how one man can make an incredible difference.  I will miss him and will make it my life’s work to carry the baton he passed on to ordinary guys like me.
